A lot of money = a lot of cards

Thursday, March 19th, 2009

Today it was announced that $1.2tn was going to be spent to boost the US economy. That’s a lot of money.

Remember that:
If $1 is 1 second,
$1k is ~20 minutes
$1m is ~12 days
$1bn is ~32 years
and finally
$1tn is 32,000 years 320 centuries, or 32 millenia!

….thus showing that we’ve never evolved an ability as a species to understand ‘big’ numbers!
It’s a bit like the 1, 2, many of some African tribes (e.g. The Gods Must be Crazy!).

And given that we think in cards:
If $1 is 0.3 of card
And each card is 4cm long
Then each $1 is 1.3cm
and $100 is 1.3 metres
$10,000 is 130 metres
$1,000,000 is 13 km
and finally $1.2tn is more than 15 million km of cards

So, with that sort of money, you could have a line of Touchnote cards go around the equator 400 times!

Cards, more cards, and a whole lot more cards still! Really - all your birthday cards, valentine’s, mother’s day, father’s day, dog’s day, uncle’s neighbour’s day. We’d have them all covered! Piles of personalised cards - that’s got to be a better way to spend this money than anything else!

Photos become movies

Monday, March 2nd, 2009

It kind of reminds me of when I wanted to be a Disney animator. The “flick books” where I’d draw a series of stick men that were bouncing a ball, and then flick through the pages as if it were an animated. My first steps towards Jungle Book.

Saw this today which made me smile. Take a photo each day, and upload it to the site. And then it becomes a movie. I guess you need to be a little dedicated to do this everyday, but it’d be cool if you could. Might be amusing for someone’s that’s growing a beard, having a baby or losing their hair (hopefully not all at the same time). Still, looks like you could have real fun with your photos wit this one.
